composition period 4 – evaluation

Listen to the branch phrases (root+branch1+branch2+branch3) and assign them preference points in the scale of 1 to 10 (bigger numbers represent higher preference). You are not allowed to give points to your own phrase (leave it 0). Deadline for submission is on Tuesday 1.10 at 23:59 in your local timezone. In the end you can find the reaper project files, in which you can find material for the subsequent branch phrases.

the machine is learning

This section feeds on the flow created by the soundscape, but introduces a more diverse and somehow rhythmic texture. The material is entirely derived from phrases generated by the ML algorithm – three different generated phrases are interleaved and edited together. Expressions of the computer are making the content of the human. Frankenstein’s Reaper session.

My branch phrase combines material of all of the three phrases created so far, with the objective of keeping cohesive aesthetics but generating at the same time enough variation in order to fully take advantage of the existing materials.
music box nostalgia

This time, after very clearly contrasting material of branch 3, I had a need to refer in material to the previously introduced motives. I’ve chosen to make a variation on the opening music box motive and add a hidden beats to that, so the tensions grow, changing this fragment to a somehow robotic music box nostalgia. I believe that this fragment has a very good potential to be continued in any possible direction – treated as a suggestion of a new phase, or as a interruption of a narration.

The end of phrase two suggested some sort of change yet I thought I will stick with it for a little longer. Thus, my contribution expands upon phrase two with a gradual introduction of new seeds that could potential develop in the next phrases.

This time I found generated phrases much more interesting and “musical” than the ones from the previous stages. Therefore, I have used part of “generated 3-7” phrase, as it consists of almost all of the sound samples used in the previous phrases. I see branch phrase 4 as building up to a more dynamic and dense part of the piece.
